Seeds & Receipts

An Interlude

Although Deep Routes (DR) gets most of my attention these days, Seeds & Receipts (S&R) is still a really important personal project of mine and I’ll continue adding to this space, albeit at the slower rate I did the first gallery which took me about a year.

Seeds & Receipts will also continue to be as it was originally intended: a space for me to reflect on my personal food stories and how they intersect with the larger network of BIPOC foodways, stories, and narratives. However, the “larger network” part turned out to be even bigger than I expected, and I’m excited to be creating a platform with others that will hopefully give it its due space to flourish and grow.

That said, because my love of plants, people, food, history, science, and art will always show up in some shape or form in my work and play, I’m compelled to make a distinction between the two projects.

S&R is on a path to becoming a more experimental space to record the food stories of myself and my family. DR is also a project of storytelling and food and farming and reconstruction, but it’s from the standpoint of being an educational community resource and does not center me.

Also, as alluded to above, the next gallery for Seeds & Receipts is really taking its sweet time in gestation. Like I keep checking the oven window and the essays and photos are like “um, madam, we’re not ready yet, please be patient.”

So this gallery, er, interlude, is just a slice of my gratitude for this project, this past year, and just everything that keeps me going. Even before my dear astrology-insider friends told me this year would be my saturn return, I felt this birthday to be really important to recognize no matter how badly I want to hide in my aches. Important to express my gratitude and joy, celebrate my life, and tend to my growing pains.
